Chapter Eleven
He should have been kicking himself for what he’d done. He should have been running for the hills. Instead, Lucas didn’t seem able to rouse himself from the bed, or from Lacy.
A million emotions rushed through him, none of them expected. Tenderness. Possessiveness. Shock.
But how shocked could he be? He had dreamed of Lacy Calhoun. He would have to be the world’s most outrageous liar to pretend that the thought of bedding her hadn’t crossed his mind about a thousand times since the infernal girl had stepped off the stage.
Had he actually thought he would? That was another question.
Only now it wasn’t a question at all. It was a done deal. And he couldn’t pretend that the deed had been done with any ulterior motive, with any devious design. It had just been pure impulsive desire. He’d wanted Lacy. Ever since their dance at the pavilion, it had seemed that their fate had been sealed. Lacy was a fever in his blood, and her appearance in the attic after dinner had seemed like an answered prayer. He hadn’t been able to take his eyes off her.
But what had landed the fatal blow on his waning restraint had been the realization that she wanted him. Really wanted him. Her eyes had told him so. He had detected in those blue orbs an emotion he hadn’t seen for a long, long time.
Maybe it had been a trick of the candlelight up here. The flickering glow cast deep shadows around the odd-shaped room. The roof that made the walls around them formed a sharp V up to the ceiling, giving it a tent-like feel. He looked down at Lacy, so beautiful lying next to him. Her skin looked as fine and delicate as porcelain. And her face, unguarded, was a different landscape entirely from the defensive, combative mask he usually saw there. She looked so peaceful and relaxed. Her hair swept over her cheek like a shimmering waterfall.
He was filled with awe at her beauty. And he was also filled with something else, a feeling he didn’t recognize at first. Elation.
For so long he had muddled along, doing his business, raising his son. Maybe he had forgotten about what it felt like to simply be happy. But now, deep inside, he was almost giddy. Making love to Lacy had gone against every shred of reason. He might have heeded any number of alarms going off inside his head. But he hadn’t, and now he felt…jubilant. If he weren’t concerned about waking Lacy, he would have raised a shout, punched the air, or pulled her into his arms and swung her in a circle so that her feet never touched the ground.
He wished then that they were somewhere far away from Blissful, from prying eyes, from their own prejudices. Yet the very real world of the small town around them would intrude, probably sooner than later. There would have to be a reckoning.
He was gently brushing his hand through her corn-silk hair when her eyes swept open.
